About My Research

This is Me

This page is a quick summary of how I chose my research topic, the restrictions on my dataset both in my original choice and how I chose to simplify it, and how I see myself using it in the future in an academic or professional setting.

Why I chose this dataset and how I plan to use it:
  1. This project itself:
    • I was allowed to pick anything I want for a research topic, be it a personal or professional interest, but we were told that we could very easily show the project to future employers, and so may want to pick a subject that would work with that. Given I want to go into video game design, I looked for a dataset that was related to that.
    • I needed to pick a dataset with between 50-150,000 rows and at least 2 text and numeric columns respectively. The original dataset that I chose had 2 text columns, 8 numeric columns, and 4989 rows(not counting the top description row)
    • We were told to cull our datasets down to 3-5 columns with at least 1 text and numeric columns, and to get rid of any data that seemed faulty or irrelevant. Luckily my dataset had no empty or otherwise unusable datapoints, but some of the columns seemed either incorrect, vague, or difficult to accurately measure. These are the columns I chose to drop, in favor of clear, useful information that can give a reliable picture of their data.

  2. Portfolio:
    • For Jobs: A portfolio would show all my computer science assignments and projects that I've done to display my skills. That way my employers can see what kind of work I can produce, rather than just seeing the piece of paper that says "she can do work".
    • For School: I can use my portfolio to show everything I've accomplished over my time in school, either as a project, as portfolios are pretty common assignments once you get close to the end of schooling, or to prove my abilities for higher classes or even higher levels of education, which may need documentation of my classwork
    • To document my progress: A portfolio shows all the work you've done over the years, and so is a very good point to look back at and feel a sense of pride at your growth and accomplishments

  3. Work:
    • The specific dataset I chose, gaming trends, was because I want to become a video game developer myself, and understanding the trends and causation behind success in the business is very important
    • I could show this data to future employers or coworkers, and that data could be useful to them just as much as it's useful for me
    • I can show this information to employers to prove I have the skills to turn generic meaningless data into something useful and informative.
